One of our more challenging clients was the CEO of a European-based digital technology company who was tasked with establishing a U.S. presence. Despite his career success in Europe, he was convinced that he was going to have a very challenging time succeeding in the United States. Using many of the tactics described in this chapter, we provided this leader with a regular reality check about his performance. Through the use of a 360-degree appraisal and by asking simple and direct questions such as “What feedback are you getting from the board about your performance?” (Answer: “Exceeding expectations”) or “What are you hearing from your colleagues?” (Answers: “Great team player. Great big-picture thinker. Tremendous asset to the company. Develops his people extremely well”), we were able show this leader empirical evidence of his outstanding performance.

Seeing the positive feedback in the black and white of the 360 report and hearing us pose questions that he was not asking himself because of his lack of positive self-belief, the executive became able to accept what others actually saw in him. Over time his confidence grew stronger and stronger. He was able to build and scale the business thanks to feeling secure enough to hire top talent, trusting in his own abilities to communicate and be transparent with his team on the challenges that lie ahead, and learning to integrate his own style with the business culture of the United States.
